Presentation Description

Presented at the Taxonomy Boot Camp, Sept. 27-28, 2005, New York, NY.

This presentation covers qualitative and quantitative methods for testing a taxonomy’s usability. Qualitative methods involve expert reviews, editorial rule checks, sample content tagging, user surveys, and task-based usability tests like card sorting. Quantitative methods use data to analyze the taxonomy’s structure, such as how evenly content is distributed across categories (checking against a Zipf curve) and how consistently users categorize items. The presentation identifies a key, underused resource for quantitative data: user query logs and click trails, which show what users are actually looking for.
