AI Can Spot Gaps, But It Can’t Decide Which Ones Matter

Generative tools are exceptionally fast at identifying gaps in large datasets.

However, they suffer from a fatal structural limitation: AI lacks the judgment to determine if a gap is worth filling.

When analyzing enterprise data sets, an unsupervised model will flag hundreds of missing attributes. But in technical information architecture, over-classifying low-value attributes introduces unnecessary system bloat and administrative drag.

  • Mechanical detection: AI detects missing data points mechanically, but it cannot evaluate operational priority or financial impact.
  • The already solved check: Machine tools don’t know if a perceived gap has already been resolved in another department or external schema.
  • Strategic ownership: Deciding whether a data gap is critical enough to build and maintain requires human ownership.

AI is an effective assistant for surfacing variance, but humans must remain in the driver’s seat to enforce business focus.
